The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is located in the British Isles. They lie in the northwest of Europe. The British Isles are separated from the mainland by a narrow strait called the English Channel.
The UK consists of four parts: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. England, in the central part, occupies most of the island of Great Britain. In the north of Scotland and to the west is the third part of the country, Wales. The fourth part is called Northern Ireland and is on another island. Each part has its own capital. The capital of England-London, Wales-Cardiff, Scotland-Edinburgh and the capital of Northern Ireland-Belfast.
